Last week we sanded all the parquet in the house, but we still have to varnish it so that this old oak wooden floor can regain its lost splendor. I’m describing in this post how we will proceed step by step to varnish the parquet floor.
Equipment needed to varnish a parquet floor
- Vacuum
- 120-grit sanding paper
- Varnish (We chose a colorless varnish with mat finish)
- Roller
- Bucket
- Mop
- White Spirit (if using polyurethane varnish)
- Protective mask (because the products can be toxic!)
- Protective glasses
How to varnish a parquet floor, the different steps :
- Clean the floor
Vacuum the floor and use a dry cloth to remove all traces of dust
- Apply the first coat of varnish
– Before applying the varnish, shake the product well to get a homogeneous appearance during application.
– Then, apply the product using a roller and let it dry for a couple of hours (4 to 6 hours).
– While waiting for the varnish to dry, and so that the roller doesn’t get dry and can be reused, it can either be cleaned with white spirit, or stored in a plastic bag. - Light sanding and cleaning
Once the 1st coat has dried, a light sanding with 120-grit sanding paper must be done before passing the 2nd coat of varnish.
After completing this step, vaccuum and clean the floor to remove the sanding dust. - Apply a 2nd and 3rd coat of varnish
It is necessary to apply at least two coats to ensure that the parquet is well protected, or even three coats in the case of frequent passageways. In between each coats, a light sandin need to be done. (But of course not after the last coat is applied!)
And here is the final result :
We’re so thrilled with the result, especially since this parquet floor was in such a bad condition. We’re now going to protect it thoroughly, because next week, the painters are coming!
