Discover how a small one bedroom flat is given a complete makeover and is turned into a typical charming parisian style apartment.
This flat, located in a classic ancient building of a wealthy Parisian suburb, had been rented for many years and was in poor condition, with absolutely no style whatsoever. A full refurbishement was needed.
I wanted to give this place an upgrade so that it could fit the style of the building, and bring style, coziness and the charm of old Parisian flats (oak wooden floor, molding, fireplace). The flat was fully renovated by following this guideline. The original pine parquet flooring under the seagrass carpet was not kept because it was in poor condition. Instead, I opted for the installation of a second-hand herringbone oak wooden floor, in order to get an old charming effect that new flooring doesn’t have. Given the size of the living room (10 m²), a small Prussian fireplace was installed rather than a traditional old style marble fireplace that would have been too imposing, and moldings were added to the walls and ceilings. A pattern of horizontal rectangles was favoured to visually give more height to the room.
A classic style decoration was chosen for this flat, mixing old pieces of furniture found in charity shops or antique shops (Louis XV style sofa and armchairs, Napoleon style desk cabinet, antique old mirrors and old prints) as well as more modern Scandinavian or industrial style pieces of furniture.
The existing kitchen floor was kept and the kitchen was designed in order to include a dining area. A multicoloured led garland was installed to give a bit of fun to this space.
The bathroom was just modernised : replacement of the old tiles by lovely grey mosaic tiles and replacement of the sink.
It was also important to choose functional and compact furniture to maximize space. So, in the bedroom, stainless steel shelves were installed to act as bedside tables, and a set of mirrors was arranged above the bed to create a headboard and give a sense of space. A custom cupboard entirely in mirrors was also created in the entrance, again with the idea of visually enlarging the space.
The use of noble materials and a judicious decoration radically transformed this one bedroom flat into a beautiful apartment with all the charm and style found in typical parisian flats. This makeover was definitely worth it!
